I found this super helpful image that shows the most commonly found pleats. There are dozens of different styles but the classics - knife, box, rolled - are the ones most easy to define.
Why Know?
Knowing the way pleats sit against a body is extremely important when designing a garment. It's also useful for putting together an outfit.
Box styled pleats create a directly flared look, like an arrowhead - thin at the top, wide at the bottom. This is flattering on skirts, or peplums, being narrowest at the waist. Knife pleats on the other hand are often used on blouses as well as skirts and dresses and are evenly space, straight up and down.
In terms of real-world pleats, box pleats need less maintenance. Knife pleats typically need to be ironed and, in most skirts and dresses, will go flat on the bum or any area that flattens out.
